Skynard Bliss on the Hillside
98 Special set the stage with their own familiar tunes. We bought tickets weeks before at an excellent price to sit on the hill in the sunset, and listen to pure, authentic rock memories live and in color. People all around were drinking beer and sodas and margaritas, smiling, and we settled in our spot and kicked back.
What can I say about this show other than we were all entertained. Bret Michaels rulled the stage. Somewhere in his performance, I got a glimpse of Brett fully empowered, like, almost, he's so happy to be here, alive. He and his band left us on our feet singing, dancing, and grinning. What energy and sincerity he brings! I think we got some of that feeling as well. We were happy to be there, alive, with him.
By the time Ahee struck the first chords, the crowd was on their feet, welcoming them with appreciation and anticipation. Next to us were a mom and dad with their two young children, probably 6 and 7. In fact, everybody I could see were all comfortable looking, and enjoying the experience. It's a pleasure to be with children when they're happy, and their folks seemed to enjoy themselves as well as everyone there. As I watched them sometimes, playing in their "space" as their parents enjoyed the hill, I noticed that we were sitting in an atmosphere without cussing, or fighting, or inappropriate drunk people.
As "Free Bird" moved us into our highest vibe, we saw pictures of the men in the band that died so many years ago. I was touched by the lighter flames and cell phone lights all over the amphitheater honoring the spirit of Ahee that lives on today. Hearing the music we love, seeing the band that carries on the magic, knowing the words, we were swept away in Skynyrd bliss. I looked around to see people dancing, and clapping, and moving to the grooving. The children next to me were both dancing with their dad, holding hands and doing their own rock expression.
Yes, it was the perfect night tonight and we left feeling fulfilled. Music, dancing, and moonlight has a way of bringing out the happy in us.
